Teenagers in Pain: Too Important to Ignore

By Pastor Cory Hunneyman

As the Student Ministries Pastor here at Lakeshore, my heart aches every time I hear of a teenager in pain. Due to the ever-growing multitude of access points that culture and media have to our students’ hearts, you can make a case that this generation is more pain-prone than any before it. Bullying, cutting, divorce, suicide, eating disorders, depression… it hurts to see teens in pain. And when teens are in pain, their parents are feeling it, and their siblings are affected as well. While the whole family may come to church with smiles on their faces, there could be inner turmoil brewing, just waiting to surface as soon as everyone’s back in the minivan.

I think what hurts more than hearing of a student in pain is knowing the reality that there are many others that we’ll never hear about. Whether it’s pride, shame, or a sense of hopelessness, many families simply do not want to talk about it, even though the issues they’re going through are way more common than they may think. There is help available. And people can change.

If you know a teenager or family in need of some extra help right now, here are some great counseling referrals that we point people to a lot. Of course, our doors are always open as well to help in any way that we can. You don’t have to go through your pain alone – you will not surprise us, and you are not the first to deal with these issues.

At Lakeshore it’s all about Serving Others!

By Kathy Shepanski

The atrium was abuzz with people excited about serving others: Where will I serve? Does God want me to serve on that team? Will I make new friends? Could I really make a difference in someone’s life? Could God really use my talents? Where could I serve and just be quietly in the background?

Those were the questions people were asking themselves the week of March 11th through the 25th. Challenged by Pastor Vince’s message that everyone loves the experience of great service, whether it’s a talented, friendly waiter at a restaurant or someone who helped us change a flat tire on a rainy day, few things grab our attention like great service.

But what if we were the ones to offer great service to others? Would it still be a great experience? One of the main things we can learn from Jesus’ teaching is how we understand “great service”—we should spend our lives serving people just as He did during His time on earth, as opposed to having people serving us.

At Lakeshore, people were living that out. People left with the attitude “here to serve” and learned that through signing up a great adventure has just begun. Serving is actually as much (or more) fun than being served and the rewards that come from it are eternal.

If you missed the opportunity to sign up, then please call the church office and talk to Kathy Shepanski and she will help you find a place where you can serve. 392-5253

Introducing Pastor Daniel Burke

Hello Lakeshore! My name is Daniel Burke and I am blessed to join the staff as the Discipleship & Care Pastor. My passion is to help you connect with others in the church and live life well together. My hope is that our ministry will inspire you to grow spiritually and reach out to your co-workers and neighbors for Jesus Christ.

About us: I grew up in Clarence, NY before moving to Dallas to go to seminary, where I have lived the last 10+ years. But make no mistake: I’m a lifelong fan of the Buffalo Bills, Sabres, and Yankees, and I love a good Garbage plate. My wife Jennifer [@BurkeJennifer on Twitter] is from nearby Pittsburgh, PA and absolutely loves Western New York. Our son Daniel (3) and daughter Clare (1) are currently helping us pick names for our third child, who is due to join us in September of 2012!

I’ve been the person I’m reaching out to… I didn’t totally grow up in church and I haven’t spent my entire life there. I hang out with people who don’t attend church as much as with people who do, or at least I try to. Since becoming a Christian, I’ve fallen flat on my face more times than you, most likely. I am ok with people who have struggled with their faith and take heat for their lifestyle, because I’m more comfortable around them and I feel like I know who they are. I was totally lost. Totally immoral. Totally dishonest. Totally all about myself

But it isn’t about me or about what I have or haven’t done. It is about Jesus. It is about His grace which takes broken people and makes them different. It is about His decision to reach down and change my heart, my status, and my beliefs about Him… it is all about Him. I’m just around to show what happens when He decides to work in somebody’s life.

We are blessed as a family to join the Lakeshore community and look forward to serving with all of you!

Hunger for Hope

Hunger For Hope 2012
By Cory Hunneyman

FAST FACTS:
Over 50 students and adults chose to experience hunger for 30 hours to raise money and awareness for the needs of the less fortunate around the world.
Our focus this year was the issue of hunger in Dondo, Mozambique through Children’s Relief International and on the need for clean drinking water in Uganda through the Ugandan Water Project.
We raised over $5000.00 to give to these projects, and still counting…
We collected over 50 bags of non-perishable food items to be donated to our local food banks in Hilton and Greece.

Lakeshore Cares for Children Here and Around the World

Spring in Friendship Company

By Jill Freese

Easter is around the corner and Lakeshore’s kids are already looking forward to this year’s Eggstravaganza Egg Hunt! It will be on Saturday, April 7th at 11am. There will be thousands of eggs to hunt, crafts to make, snacks to eat, and stories to listen to. Family, friends, and neighbors are VERY welcome!

The Children’s Ministry has a new baby – a new computerized Check-in system! The system is designed to provide a more secure environment for our children and it’s very user-friendly. Parents and their children have matching security codes and children and adults serving in the ministry are easily identified by their new name tags. The Check-in kiosks have touch screen all-in-one computers, making checking in efficient and easy.

We also have a new team in Children’s Ministry to assist parents with this system. Check-in team members are sharing their gifts of administration, service, and hospitality with Lakeshore’s families. You can share your gifts too! Contact Jill Freese by calling/emailing the church office.

Need Some New Hope This Easter?

Life has a not-so-funny way of draining hope from our hearts, doesn’t it?  We get way too busy, people expect way too much, our family life can become way too stressful and soon we’re way too low on the hope we need to cope with it all.

This spring, we’ll help you find hope in your life through the God who loves you more than you’ll ever fully know.

Our Easter services will provide you with the hope that only Jesus and His resurrection can supply.  We’ve planned what we believe will be very engaging services with great worship, moving drama, special music that will connect deeply with the service story line, and a message that will infuse hope into your life for both today and for eternity.

Make plans to be at one of our two Good Friday services (5 pm and 7 pm) and three Easter Sunday services (8:30 am, 10 am, 11:30 am).

We’ll follow Easter with two series that will encourage and help you establish this hope both for the hectic pace of life (“Simplify Your Life”), and for your family regardless if you’re married or single (“First Aid For The Family”).

Hopeful,

Pastor Vince
